Daily research and personal visits with the management of public companies have been the separator of decision-making over Matthew’s 35-year career in investment management.
Matthew began his investment career in 1985 and quickly learned that research was fundamental to successful investing. Learning how businesses operate, how management communicates, how debt is used, and knowing shareholders of publicly traded companies were the basic principles used in building a career in wealth building and wealth management. Along with the research came meaningful relationships with company management which has been a standard of privacy, confidentiality, and long-term thinking for the creation of BrickStreet Equity Management in 2003.
Matthew has focused on transportation, utilities, banking, and technology companies over his career. He maintains connections in the auto and aircraft supply chain, OEM, sales and distribution across the US. Regional banks, utilities and technology companies are also part of his research portfolio, specializing in debt coverage, cash flow analysis, and business cycle trend modeling for company management as well as portfolio management.
Currently, Matthew serves as the Chairman of the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority, is a board member of the Economic Development Coalition of Buncombe County, and Economic Investment Advisor to the Montreat College Board of Trustees. He is a private pilot with over 4500 hours, a NASCAR fan, and he and his wife Barbara play brass instruments in their church orchestra. Both are graduates of the University of Georgia, Athens.
